DGCA’s Big Move- Opening the Skies for All Streams

In a welcome move that could transform the future of pilot training in India, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is considering a proposal to permit students from the Arts and Commerce streams to pursue Commercial Pilot License (CPL) training. Until now, students needed to have Physics and Mathematics in Class 12 to be eligible for CPL training. This meant that anyone who didn’t choose Science in high school had to either reappear for these subjects separately or give up on their dream of becoming a pilot altogether.

The DGCA’s proposed change would allow students from all educational streams, provided they meet other criteria, such as medical fitness, to pursue a career as commercial pilots. Once finalised, the recommendation will be sent to the Union Government for approval.

This move is expected to make flying training more accessible and inclusive for students across India. Every year, thousands of bright young minds from non-science backgrounds express an interest in aviation but are held back by eligibility rules. With this change, they can finally consider pilot training without having studied Science in Grade 12.

For an industry like aviation, which is growing rapidly, this is a timely and much-needed step. Opening the doors to students from all academic backgrounds will help meet the increasing demand for skilled pilots while giving more young people the chance to turn their passion for flying into a profession.

At Chimes Aviation Academy, we welcome this proposed reform with great enthusiasm. We’ve always believed that your educational stream should not define your potential in the cockpit. It’s your attitude, your discipline, and your determination that matter most.

This is an exciting time for Indian aviation, and this decision could be a real game-changer. To all high school students, no matter your stream, your dream of becoming a pilot could soon be well within reach. And when that happens, Chimes Aviation Academy will be ready to train and support you every step of the way.
